How to maintain your BMW
BMW engines reward consistent, on-time servicing. In Nairobi's stop-start traffic and dusty conditions, shorter intervals and genuine fluids are the difference between a BMW that comfortably passes 300,000 km and one that doesn't.
Every 10,000–15,000 km / 12 months
Engine oil and filter using BMW LL-04/LL-01 spec oil, fluid level checks, and a Condition Based Service (CBS) reset.
Every 30,000–60,000 km
Air, fuel and cabin filters; brake fluid every 2 years; timing-chain inspection on N47/N57 diesels.
Every 60,000–100,000 km
Spark plugs (petrol), Steptronic transmission oil service, coolant and water-pump inspection.
Intervals are a guide — Nairobi traffic and dust often warrant shorter ones. We confirm the exact schedule for your vehicle.
Use the correct oil — and check it
BMWs are sensitive to oil grade and level. Use LL-04/LL-01 approved oil and check the level monthly; many models have no dipstick, only an electronic gauge that can read late.
Get ahead of the cooling system
BMW water pumps and plastic thermostats fail with age. Replacing them proactively around 90,000 km avoids overheating and expensive cylinder-head damage.
Respect the timing chain (diesels)
N47/N57 diesels can suffer timing-chain stretch. A cold-start rattle from the rear of the engine should be checked immediately before it lets go.
